How to send a parcel from Moscow to Istanbul
Dozens of flights connect Moscow and Istanbul every day. That means almost every day someone can take your documents, medicines or a gift — faster than post and cheaper than a courier.
Three options compared
Post. The cheapest and the slowest: parcels take weeks, and tracking on the Turkish side can be patchy. Rarely an option for documents needed by a date.
Courier. A few days, but international rates are charged per half kilo, so even an envelope of documents costs thousands of rubles.
Traveler. Someone already flying to Istanbul carries your parcel in hand luggage or a suitcase. Delivery takes as long as the flight. You agree on the price yourselves — sometimes it is just a favour.
How to find a traveler
- Open the Moscow — Istanbul route to see current trips and requests from the Whoflies app.
- Found a suitable date — open the listing and message the traveler in Telegram.
- No suitable trip — post a request with the route, deadline and what you need to send. Travelers on this route will see it, and a route subscription will notify you about new trips.
Listings are free and there is no sign-up — the app opens right inside Telegram.
What to pay
There is no fixed rate. The price depends on size and weight, urgency, who travels to the meeting point, and whether the traveler needs to pay for extra baggage. Never pay in advance — settle when the parcel changes hands.
What not to bring to Turkey
- E-cigarettes and heated tobacco devices (IQOS and similar) are prohibited.
- A phone as a gift is fine, but the recipient will have to IMEI-register it for a fee, or it will stop working on local networks.
- Medicines — personal amounts in original packaging, prescription drugs with a prescription.
Rules change: check the latest customs rules for Turkey in the IATA Travel Centre and with your airline.
Hand over safely
- Nothing sealed: the traveler may open the parcel and see what they carry — they are the one at customs.
- Get to know each other first: message, call, ask for social media links.
- Money only in person, ideally after the parcel reaches the recipient.
